PROJECT NO. 16

TITLE:

Promotion of Social Workers and Groups.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This is an ongoing project for promoting social work by encouraging social workers and self-help groups that perform well by giving cash awards and trophies every year during Chaithanya Karshika Mela.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS), the official social service organization of the Diocese of Kottayam has organized several self-help groups in villages for developmental training and activities. Most of them are of women from low-income families. However, there are special self-help groups for widows and women who bear full family responsibilities called Naomi Groups, for unmarried and unemployed ladies called Madonna Groups, for elderly people called Senior Citizens Groups, for the family members of physically and mentally handicapped people called Family Support Groups etc. All such self-help groups in each village are coordinated under an umbrella organization called Village Development Group. Animator and CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation) field workers under the guidance of coordinators work as staff of KSSS to support the activities.

KSSS  is conducting Chaithanya Karshika Mela (Agricultural Festival) along with the annual celebrations of the self-help groups in December.

ACTION PLAN:

Agape Movement is sponsoring the trophies and cash awards for KSSS staff, voluntary leaders of self-help groups, best groups, best Village Development Group etc.

TITLE:

Medical Aid for a Victim of Accident

DATE:

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The project is to support the victim of a truck accident who was a driver and head of the family for his treatment.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The head of the family was a truck driver who had an accident and lost one of his eyes. He needed expensive medical treatments for his recovery.

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED:

Because of lack of enough fund and money he had to spend for the education of his children, the driver had financial problems to meet his medical expenses and educational expenses of his children. He lost his job and only income of the family because of this accident.

ACTION PLAN:

Agape Movement offered financial aid for his treatment and was given through KSSS.

RESULTS:

Timely support from Agape Movement helped the treatment of the patient and so he could also continue the education of his children.

TITLE:

Income Generation Program at Mrala

April 8, 2002

IMPLEMENTING AGENCY:

Village Development Group at Mrala

AID GIVEN:

Rs. 10,000.00 (US$ 208.33)

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The project was to establish a revolving fund as loan for income generation program for members of self -help groups belonging to Village Development Group of Mrala.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS) has 14 self-help groups in Mrala that are coordinated under Village Development Group (VDG) in Mrala. The VDG raises fund to give loan to members to start or improve income generation programs as a part of its attempts to make the people self-reliant.

ACTION PLAN:

Mr. Baby Pachikkara who was originally from Mrala village had expired in Los Angeles in 2002. His children in North America has contributed for this project.

Agape Movement handed over this money to VGD of Mrala through KSSS for proper implementation of the project.

RESULTS:

The project was implemented properly. This has encouraged many to start and improve their income generation programs.

TITLE:

Smart Group Training in Mrala

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The project was to purchase educational materials for the smart group in Mrala.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS) has 14 self-help groups in Mrala. The children of these group members are coordinated as Smart Group of extra curricular training in leadership and social values. The goal is make them come up in the society as good citizens respecting social justice and equality.

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED:

Though many children were attending the program, it could not be implemented effectively without enough educational materials.

ACTION PLAN:

Mr. Baby Pachikkara who was originally from Mrala village had expired in Los Angeles in 2002. His children in North America has contributed for this project.

Agape Movement handed over Rs. 2,000.00 to the animator of the village through KSSS for proper implementation of the project.

RESULTS:

The project was implemented properly. This has made the training program more attractive and effective.

PROJECT SUMMARY: This project is to establish and keep up websites for Knanaya Catholic Community and the Diocese of Kottayam.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: With the development of electronic media, website is helpful for the globally spread members of the Knanaya Community and its diocese to contact among themselves and to unify them in mutual service.
ACTION PLAN: Agape Movement has taken initiative to start www.knanayactholics.com for the unity of Knanaya members all over the world along with free matrimonial database and membership database. It also sponsor www.kottayamdiocese.com which has the full directory of the Diocese of Kottayam.

RESULTS:

Both websites help to keep good networking and web-based service for the community members.
