IMPLEMENTING AGENCY:

AID GIVEN:

Rs. 13,450 (US$ 292.39)

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The project was to support the cataract eye surgery of 16 senior citizens and purchase of eyeglasses for nine senior citizens who are members of self-help groups organized by KSSS.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

KSSS has several self-help groups for senior citizens of low-income families in different villages. In the group meetings, one of the main issues of the members was poor eyesight. So KSSS with the cooperation of M.G.D.M. Hospital at Kangazha, facilitated a free eye testing camp for the members of members of the following groups on May 11, 2001:

Mariya – Peroor

Ullas – Malloossery

Suriya - Samcranthy

Thuvanisa - S.H.Mount

135 Senior Citizens participated in the camp.

During the eye camp doctors suggested surgery for 20 patients who have poor eyesight due to cataract illness. They also prescribed spectacles for nine group members.

The cost of Intra Ocular Lens Implantation Surgery is Rs. 2,900 per individual. However, M.G.D.M. hospital had offered a concession rate of Rs. 700.00 excluding the medical expenses and other expenses like food and traveling, which costed Rs. 600 each. So total cost per patient was Rs. 1,300.00.

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED:

The follow-up home visits of the staff of KSSS, revealed that the identified senior citizens and their families are unable to meet the full expense for surgery and for the purchase of glasses.

ACTION PLAN:

KSSS with the support of Agape Movement had offered the senior citizens a subsidy to meet the partial expense of the surgery and the purchase of glasses.

RESULTS:

This timely intervention of KSSS and Agape Movement helped to provide eye sight to many senior citizens.
